Congratulations to Jada Maher and Superstar Frost (Hen) for winning the barrel racing at the Fargo Jr. High Rodeo last weekend! Hen was born, raised and trained on the Goehring-Routier Ranch and was purchased by Jada last summer. We are excited to watch the two of them excel in the years to come!!
It has been a really exciting spring for our Smoothie family. It started off with a trip to Oklahoma City April 4-7 for the Ram National Circuit Finals Rodeo. This was Smoothie’s 4th trip to the event (we made 2 to Pocatello, Idaho and this was our 2nd since it moved to Oklahoma City). Although we did not make the semi-finals this year (they take 8 back and we were 10th) it is always an honor just to be there and to be able to run with the tough competition.
We left Oklahoma City the morning of April 7th… the same morning that this little girl decided to grace us with her presence. Luckily Riley was there to greet her. She is one of the twins we were able to have this year via embryo transfer so while Smoothie is still busy running barrels we get to have babies at the same time! The filly’s dad is High on Corona, a young stallion whose babies are already proving themselves in the arena. We named her Margie after Margie Jones at Northern Hills Vet Clinic who was able to make embryo transfer work for us after many others were unsuccessful.
Eleven days later Margie’s twin brother Swift was born! They are very different but I see a lot of Smoothie in both of them… full of life and energy that is for sure! Margie likes to race everywhere she goes, as fast as she can and she spent her first week trying to kick everybody. She shows more interest in us now. She likes to nibble our fingers and likes to have your attention when she is asking for it but if it’s not her idea you’d better watch out. Swift likes to wrestle. He jumps on everything, including us and Margie… and Margie hates it! They are so much fun to watch.
The other exciting thing we have been able to experience this spring was sending Special to college! Special was Smoothie’s only child until the twins were born and now he has gone off to college rodeo with Joey Painter. The two have done well so far, making most of the short rounds and gaining a few points toward the year end standings and they have two rodeos left. It has been really fun to watch the two of them do well!
This past weekend was Smoothie’s last run of the spring season before she has a little break to focus on more embryo transferring! She did well, placing 2nd at the Triple Turn Classic out of 335 entries. She is 18 years old this year, and I count my blessings every day that I am still able to go compete on her!
